How to easily create Custom Icons for Folders in Windows?

Prior to XP, a folder was yellow and that was it, case closed, unless you used a third party program to change the folder icons. Those days are over. XP has the ability to use different icons built right in via the context menu. Here's how:

  1. Open Windows Explorer (Ctrl + E), select a folder, right click and select Properties. The Property Sheet for the selected folder will open
  2. Select the Customize tab

You can change the type of folder to match the contents, select a picture for use in thumbnail view or change the folder icon that will appear in any view other than thumbnail.

This is great information, I never knew this, and I always wondered if there was a way to customize folder icons. I knew you could add a background and even skin the window, but this is news to me. thanks for posting this information.
